- Don't indulge in a heavy meal with a lot of alcohol before going to bed.
- Don't drink tea, coffee, or any substance with caffeine before you sleep because it has a stimulating effect.
- Make sure that your bedroom is quiet, cool and airy.
- Make sure your bedroom is sufficiently darkened, as light from an outside source can often disturb you.
- If you don't fall asleep within 15 minutes, get out of bed. Only go back to bed when you're sleepy or tired.
- Go to bed at the same time every night, and wake up at the same time every morning.
- Think relaxing thoughts. For example, picture yourself soothed in a tub of warm water, drifting to sleep with every muscle relaxed.
- Soothing music is often very helpful in making you drowsy.
- While in bed, do not dwell on your insomnia or your anxiety level will increase.
- Don't watch an exciting movie, or engage in stimulating or argumentative discussions before going to bed.
